Stern is the German word for "star."

My family on my dad's side has its origins in Germany. I love the story my grandmother told me about when Georg Stern came to America and was being registered at Ellis Island. The clerk suggested to Georg that he might want to add an 'e' to his name so that it would be the more American "George." The story goes that Georg replied that if he was going to add an 'e' to his first name, they may as well add an 'e' to his last as well. And so we have been "Sterne" ever since.
